Area Sports Update

The Best Seat In the House
-by Ray Seifer
With the 1997 Fall Sports season in full swing, I¹ve been running around like a chicken with his head cut off (Ouch--bad analogy!) Well, whether the thermometer agrees or not, it is fall, and for the most part area teams got off to a good start, winning 5 of 7 games last week.
Looking forward to this week¹s football action, on Friday the Paxton Tigers travel to Eustis Farnum. Eustis Farnum and Elwood are pre-season conference co-favorites. Hershey will travel to Grant who was handled just as roughly by Burlington as Hershey was by Holyoke. (Consolation for both teams could come when UNL meets colorado in November). Sutherland will face a much-improved Bertrand team. The Sailors won¹t be able to give up 135 yards in penalties if they want to win this one.
In girls action, Hershey is playing Gothenburg as this is being written, and on Saturday, they travel to Elm Creek to defend their championship in that tourney. I doubt they have much trouble. The Lady Sailors host Garden County on Thursday and Bertrand on Friday, two teams they didn¹t have much trouble with last year. Keep in mind, however, tht Oshkosh beat St. Pats to go to state last year. Paxton¹s Lady Tigers travel to Eustis/Farnum on Friday and are hoping to improve to 2-1. The Sutherland Cross-country team travels toImperial on Thursday as well.
There is plenty of action out there this week. As the temps start to drop a mite, making the gyms a little more comfortable and jackets advisable at football games, I hope to see you out there supporting your favorite teams.

Sutherland Football Field Gets New Pressbox
Fans attending Sutherland home football games will notice an addition to the pressbox. In fact, it¹s now a double-decker. The new box was built by ³Close-Enuf Construction, Inc.² consisting of volunteers, Matt Springer, Bill O¹Malley, Rick Kinnaman, Eric Kinnaman and Jim Copeland. Close examination of the brush strokes by experts reveals that the paint was applied by the team of M. ŒRembrandt¹ Troxel and Dale Douglas ŒPicasso¹, otherwise known by their trade name, ³Lettuce Slapper On.²
The actual lift was made by NPPD volunteers Paul Jochum, Howard Ady and Randy Jochum. The old roof was removed via the surgical skills of Veterinarian Myron McCune. Other volunteers helping were Pat Kallhoff and Mark Winder.
